It is located in an area known as the \u2018Markets\u2019 as it was dominated by the Belfast abattoir and animal and farm markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a market on this site dating back to 1604.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After heavy bombing of Belfast by German aircraft in World War II, St George&#8217;s Market was used as an emergency mortuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 900 were killed during the bombing raids; 255 bodies were brought to St George&#8217;s Market in an attempt to identify them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today there are three markets held in St Georges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Friday variety market where there are around 200 market stalls selling fruit, vegetables, antiques, books, clothes, hot food, cakes and buns, crafts and a large selection of fresh fish.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday city food and craft market that has local, continental and specialty foods including meat and fish, cheese, coffee beans, tapas and organic products from around the world.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Sunday market, craft and antiques market which features a mix of the Friday and Saturday markets with emphasis on local arts and crafts, offering more local craftspeople the opportunity to showcase their talents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market was named the UK&#8217;s Best Large Indoor Market in 2019 by the NABMA Great British Market Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FOR MORE INFORMATION on guided walking tours around Belfast visit this . <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St George&#8217;s Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast.
