{"id":1983,"date":"2022-08-02T02:10:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T02:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/?p=1983"},"modified":"2022-05-19T14:12:59","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T14:12:59","slug":"union-theological-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/02\/union-theological-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Union Theological College"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union Theological College is the theological and ministerial training college for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g9e822b\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-g9e822b gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/20220117_141242-scaled.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was founded in 1853 and built in a Renaissance Revival style with a grand Doric porch and Baroque attic. The building was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the College offers a modest number of distance learning postgraduate courses in Theology and awards degrees validated by the Catholic St Mary&#8217;s University, Twickenham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of the 1859 religious revival, its south wing with its dining hall and student accommodation was added in 1869.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newly formed Parliament of Northern Ireland met in the College from 1921 until 1932 while Stormont was being built<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 1941 and 1948 the city police used the College as its own headquarters were bombed in the Belfast Blitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1927, one of the college professors, J. Ernest Davey, was the subject of a heresy trial because of his teaching in the College. &nbsp;Although cleared by the Church\u2019s courts, a small number of Presbyterians broke away unhappy with the decision and founded what later became the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Union Theological College is the theological and ministerial training college for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
