{"id":2379,"date":"2023-10-13T04:10:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T04:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/?p=2379"},"modified":"2022-12-10T16:15:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-10T16:15:42","slug":"balmoral-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/13\/balmoral-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"Balmoral Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balmoral Cemetery was declared open to the public on 13 October 1855.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cemetery was built after Reverend Henry Cooke and Reverend Joseph Mackenzie of Malone were refused permission to carry out a \u2018proper\u2019 Presbyterian funeral in another churchyard. The pair decided to set up their own burial ground on land belonging to Reverend Mackenzie, beside Stockman\u2019s Lane.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The graveyard, originally known as Belfast Cemetery, Malone, became public property in 1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g334af8\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-g334af8 gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220910_143534-scaled.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burials were mostly of subscribing and non-subscribing Presbyterians but the graveyard was also used by other denominations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the 1920s, the site had fallen into disrepair and, in 1953, it was taken over by Belfast Corporation (now the council).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amongst those buried in Balmoral Cemetery are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reverend Joseph Mackenzie (1811-1883). The co-founder of the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reverend Henry Cooke (1788-1868). Cooke was a prominent Presbyterian noted for his conservative and anti-Catholic views. However, he was an active abolitionist of slavery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Wilberforce Arnold (1838-1891). The founder of the Presbyterian Orphan Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">William Batt (1840-1910).
