{"id":2559,"date":"2023-03-22T15:27:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T15:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/?p=2559"},"modified":"2022-12-11T15:28:37","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T15:28:37","slug":"jaffe-memorial-drinking-fountain-victoria-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/22\/jaffe-memorial-drinking-fountain-victoria-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Jaffe Memorial Drinking Fountain, Victoria Square"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The iron fountain was a memorial to Daniel Joseph Jaffe erected by his son Offo Jaffe in 1874.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel Jaffe was a German industrialist who founded the linen exporters of Jaffe Brothers of Hamburg, Dundee, Belfast, Liepzig and Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was originally born in Schwerin in 1809 and died in 1874.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel Jaffe\u2019s interest in the textile industry brought the family to Belfast, by then known as \u2018Linenopolis\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1851, Daniel Jaffe financed the construction of a linen warehouse \u2018in Italian Renaissance style\u2019 at the corner of Linenhall Street and Donegall Square South.<a href=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/30\/jaffe-memorial\/#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>&nbsp;His son Otto, took over the family business in 1877.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Memorial was first sited by Victoria Square, then the fountain was later moved to the Botanic Gardens.
