{"id":2660,"date":"2023-05-23T18:14:35","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T18:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/?p=2660"},"modified":"2022-12-11T18:20:45","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T18:20:45","slug":"the-millie-crumlin-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/23\/the-millie-crumlin-road\/","title":{"rendered":"The Millie, Crumlin Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This bronze statue by Ross Wilson was erected in 2010 close to the former site of Ewarts\u2019 Mill and the Edenderry Mill on the Crumlin Road, Belfast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statue pays tribute to Belfast\u2019s female linen mill workers; they were known as \u2018millies\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 70% of the workforce in the linen trade towards the end of the 19th century were women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many toiled daily for little pay in the spinning rooms of Belfast\u2019s numerous mills and factories, many located on the Crumlin Road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you want to learn more about the history of Belfast?
