Today, it is part of National Museums NI [Northern Ireland] (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmni.com\/Home.aspx\">https:\/\/www.nmni.com\/Home.aspx<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Museum tells the story of the natural and human history of Ulster. It has collections of art, natural history, material culture and botany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It has around half a million visitors a year and 8km2 of display area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gf0cfa4\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-gf0cfa4 gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20201217_112702-485x1024.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1970s, an extension was built to the Museum in the \u2018brutalist\u2019 style, a mode of architecture that is based on raw concrete, geometric shapes and little decoration. During the time of its construction the design caused outrage in polite society and it still divides many into those who love it or hate it. The third phase of the Museum\u2019s development came in the 2000s when it underwent a \u00a317m refurbishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The metal sculpture outside is \u2018New Metal Piece\u2019 made by Welsh artist Barry Flanagan in 1978.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ulster Museum building was opened to the public at its current site in the Queen\u2019s Quarter of Belfast in 1929.
