{"id":999,"date":"2021-11-23T11:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T11:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/?p=999"},"modified":"2021-11-05T13:48:55","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T13:48:55","slug":"the-belfast-lying-in-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/index.php\/2021\/11\/23\/the-belfast-lying-in-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"The Belfast Lying in Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Belfast\u2019s first maternity hospital was established in 1794 due to the efforts of a small group of philanthropists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g370dfb\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-g370dfb gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/lying-in-hospital.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">They opened in a house rented to them by the Belfast Charitable Society at 25 Donegall Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the hospital was to aid labouring \u2018indigent females\u2019 by providing accommodation, food and medical supervision during childbirth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Rev. John Clark, curate of St. Anne\u2019s Belfast, and Mrs Martha McTier, the wife of Samuel McTier and sister of Dr William Drennan, have been attributed as the founders of this institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The hospital was funded by subscribers and donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In 1830, a new hospital, \u2018a commodious building\u2019, was built \u2018at the upper-end of Donegall Street\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It was run by a committee of \u2018Ladies\u2019 for much of its time. Martha McTier was elected as the first Secretary \u2018to her surprise\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The committee hired only three employees to work in the hospital overseeing its daily operations. These people were a housekeeper, midwife, and a maidservant. Three doctors, Dr Robert Stephenson, Dr McCluney and Dr Thompson, provided their services to the hospital but seem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g248731\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-g248731 gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/drtomstours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/lying-in-hospital-slip.png\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">To gain admission, patients were required to produce a ticket that could only be distributed by committee members to subscribers who donated five shillings or more. These subscribers could recommend patients to attend. In 1832, a ruling was made that only married women could be admitted to the hospital which probably excluded many women who were the most in need of its services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The hospital remained on this site until 1903 when a new facility opened in Townsend Street, west Belfast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Belfast\u2019s first maternity hospital was established in 1794 due to the efforts of a small group of philanthropists.
