Isobel Addey Tate (1 May 1875 – 28 January 1917) left an indelible mark as a pioneering Irish medical doctor and a valiant figure in World War I. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the sole woman commemorated on the Queen’s University Belfast Roll of Honour and War memorial for her extraordinary contributions during the war.
Early Life and Career
Born into a merchant and Methodist family in Portadown, Tate embarked on her journey in medicine at Queen’s College Belfast, graduating with distinction in 1899. After registering with the General Medical Council of Ireland, she pursued further studies, obtaining her Doctorate in Medicine in 1902 and a Diploma in Public Health from Victoria University Manchester in 1904. Tate’s career path led her to various medical roles, including serving as a resident physician at Hailey sanatorium near Oxford and as a Medical Inspector of school children in Shropshire and Preston.
Service in World War I
With the outbreak of World War I, Tate’s commitment to humanitarian aid led her to join The Serbian Relief Fund, where she played a pivotal role in establishing dispensaries and overseeing the x-ray department in Serbia. Despite the challenging conditions and prevalence of diseases like typhoid, Tate remained steadfast in her mission. After falling ill herself, she returned to Britain and served at Graylingwell Hospital, which had been requisitioned as a military hospital. In 1916, Tate volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corps and was deployed to Malta, where she continued her tireless efforts to care for the sick and wounded.
Legacy and Memorials
Tate’s selfless dedication and sacrifice are immortalized in various memorials, including an inscription on her grave in Pieta, Malta, which serves as a poignant reminder of her unwavering commitment to duty. Additionally, her name is commemorated on a memorial at County Hall, Preston, honoring the courageous individuals from Lancashire County Offices who served during the Great War.
